hello!
I'm Peaches, an industrial Designer, illustrator, problem solver, and a learner. I believe that creativity is much more than just a skill: it's a way of life. And my job is simply to spread this way of life.

As a designer, I'm always looking for new perspectives to observe, to think, and to improve.

I believe that
life is peachy, so enjoy!

MY STORY OF BEING A DESIGNER

03 Experience

HOW I BECAME WHO I AM
INTERACTION

The Festival of Trees

The Festival of Trees is an annual holiday celebration, decorated by Edmonton’s community spirit and philanthropic passion. By volunteering in this event, I gained insights in how to interact with young children.

CREATIVITY

Scarecrow Festival

Scarecrow Festival is an annual fall community fundraising event. Other than interacting with the children, I learnt that creativity could be drawn from an innocent perspective, for instance, from children. The scarecrows and the pumpkins created by the kids and their parents were beautiful, because they also stood for stories and memories.

MENTORSHIP

Big Brother and Big Sister

Big Brother and Big Sister provides volunteer opportunities to high schools students or adults to be a friend and positive role model to youth in communities throughout Canada. In this experience, I did some creative activities with my mentee, Rachel. My job was to be a mentor, although I suppose the she taught me so much as well.

REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCE

Pop Pop Shop

I designed playing cards and put them on sale at the Pop Pop Shop (Dec 2015), held by University of Alberta Student Association of Design. This was the very first time that I got involved in making decisions of mass producing my design. I encountered problems in terms of production, budgeting, and price estimating etc. It was a promising start that I sold 22 decks of playing cards. However, it was also a lesson for me to learn in terms of making decisions: I printed 500 decks resulting in low cost for individual deck but high cost overall. Although I was below the breakeven point, the lesson was worthwhile to learn.

DESIGN & EDUCATION

The American Lung Association

I volunteered in a building-climbing event held by The American Lung Association, a voluntary health organization whose mission is to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through education, advocacy and research. The event aims to raise awareness toward lung disease through interactive activities with the participants. In the event, I saw an opportunity of how design could be utilized in a engaging way with an educational purpose.

ATMOSPHERE

Concrete Cat

I attended the first sale day held by Concrete Cat, an interdisciplinary team of designers and artisans based out of Edmonton, Alberta Canada. This was the first time that I really had a chance to interact with the designers (in the real world, outside of school). Seeing the the beautiful concrete pieces sparked my interest in the production process. This also reinforced my insights into school projects related to production process in future, more specifically, the mold making process.

One thing that I also noticed was the way how people interacted each other in the workshop - they were not only colleges but also friends. I guess it was such a nice atmosphere that  so many nice art pieces were created.

CATEGORIZATION

Reuse Centre

I volunteered at Reuse Centre, which various items from Edmonton residents free of charge and makes them available to organizations and individuals for reuse. From this experience of sorting out the items, I gained insights on how effective categorization could save energy and time.

LEARNING &NOTICING

Text and Texture 2017

Volunteered in Industrial Night for University of Alberta Bachelor of Design Grad show, Text and Texture 2017 (held March 28 - April 8). Since my grad show is approaching, by volunteering in this event, I got the opportunity to learn from the graduates. Meanwhile, I also noticed details that I could potentially pay more attention to in displaying more work in the near future.

REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCE 2.0

Built

I designed sweatshirts and put them on sale at the Built, a temporary retail space at Kingsway Mall. Learnt from last experience of the playing cards, I was much more cautious in ordering the sweatshirts. Luckily, posting a pre-sale on my social media resulted in a early sold-out. More luckily, the second batch of sweatshirt came in on time for sale on the event, and they were all sold as well. This time I learnt the importance of a wise decision in production, the social media, and of course, the support of families and friends in spreading word of month.

REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCE 3.0

Built 2017

This year I designed and made some necklace pendents and brooches for Built. The pieces are all handmade. By finishing with walnut oil, the subtle beauty of wood was brought out. Each piece was shaped to be unique with the accompany with leather. The pendants were made out of offcuts from other project, therefore giving new meaning to the wood.

Inclusive Design + Bariatric Sensitive:

The Sihe chair aims to play a crucial yet seamless role in hospital cafeteria setting for social life of the general public, differently-abled persons, and for persons with different body sizes. Sihe means in all directions, far and near/wide, the winds from all directions. Therefore the name emphasizes the concept of inclusiveness that I wanted to stress in this project.

This project was also selected to be presented at the European Obesity Congress at  Vienna in 2018.

e3 Berlin

I participated in The University of Alberta’s e3 Berlin summer program, a unique education abroad program. During the study, I visited almost every museum in Berlin as it always fascinated me to see how different cultures could foster different ways in expressing art. Also, one thing that interested me the most was how different layouts of the museum could evoke different feelings toward the visitors.
